Uruguay World Cup history
Uruguay has appeared in 15 men's World Cups through 2026 and has won two titles. It became the first champion as host in 1930 and then defeated Brazil in the decisive final-round match at the Maracanã in 1950. Later generations reached the semifinals in 1954, 1970 and 2010, preserving a tournament identity built on compact defending, competitive midfield play and decisive forwards.
Uruguay's influence is larger than its population or number of appearances might suggest. The first champions combined Olympic-era experience with an aggressive passing game. The 1950 team remained tactically disciplined under pressure in Brazil, while the 2010 semifinalists used Diego Forlán between midfield and attack, Luis Suárez as a mobile forward and a highly organised defensive block. Across eras, Uruguay has often been strongest when technical quality is reinforced by collective intensity.
