Germany World Cup history
Germany has appeared in 21 men's World Cups through 2026 and has won four titles, in 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014. The national team also finished runner-up four times, giving it eight final appearances and one of the deepest records in tournament history. Its 2026 campaign ended in the round of 32 after a penalty-shootout defeat by Paraguay.
Germany's strongest World Cup teams have repeatedly combined tactical organisation with the ability to change during a tournament. The 1954 side recovered from a heavy group-stage defeat to Hungary, the 1974 champions adjusted around Franz Beckenbauer and a flexible midfield, and the 1990 team blended experienced defenders with direct attacking quality. The 2014 champions were more possession-oriented but retained the transition speed, set-piece threat and competitive control associated with earlier generations.
